Matsumoto and the Alpine Route

I stayed 2 nights in Matsumoto, one at a hostel and one at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). The ryokan had a soft futon, shower robe, tea, and no English. Also no complaints from me. Matsumoto has a Banff feel, although it is bigger.

The Matsumoto castle, one of three original castles in Japan. I finally got to see a real Japanese castle! It had corridors for samurai to run down, and a hidden third floor with no windows to give the illusion of 5 floors instead of 6 (making the hidden floor the safest).

I also went to the largest wasabi farm in the world! I had wasabi ice cream and a wasabi croquette which was like a pita kind of.

For those of you wondering, this is a wasabi root.

The last day in the Japan alps we did this alpine route. It was a bunch of buses, trams, and ropeways. Along the way we passed the kurobe dam.

But the biggest attraction was the walls of snow 18m high! They dig down all at one time after the bulk of snow has fallen, the path is only open about 2 months of the year before all the snow completely melts.
